Idealized and simplified diagram of the Grand Canyon There are a number of lava flows on the plateau that the canyon is cut into yellow in Figure 1, above. These lava flows are Cenozoic in age, and some of them spill into the canyon. The walls of the canyon are mostly cut into horizontal rock layers of Paleozoic age green in Figure 1, above. There is an angular unconformity at the bottom of the Paleozoic layers. An angular unconformity is the result of tilting and eroding of the lower layers before the upper ones are deposited.
These tilted and eroded layers are Precambrian in age blue in Figure 1, above.

There are two stories regarding Grand Canyon geology. Part one concerns the actual rock layers, and in particular, when and how they were deposited.

Fluvial gravels initially accumulated in shallow river valleys. They later lithified into a basal conglomerate that is known as the Hotauta Member of the Bass Formation. Diagenesis later altered the bulk of the limestone into dolomite. Shinumo Quartzite is a resistant marine sedimentary quartzite that was eroded to form monadnocks that later became islands in Cambrian time.
Those islands withstood wave action long enough to become re-buried by other sediments in the Cambrian Period.
Part one concerns the actual rock layers, and in particular, when and how they were deposited. This subject has been covered in depth in many other papers. Part two of Grand Canyon geology deals with why the Colorado River happened to pick this particular path allowing it to cut the Grand Canyon. This research paper is an attempt to depict the geologic history of the Colorado River, and in particular, how it formed the Grand Canyon.

The author, Andrew Snelling , attempts to cast doubt upon the dating of rocks of the Grand Canyon. This is not a surprise, since most young earth materiel relies more on emotion than it does on scientific facts.
Snelling then goes on to mention the accepted radiometric dating ages for the basalt lavas located deep within the canyon. He lists the age as last having erupted about 1, million years ago, and they were metamorphosed about 1, years ago. Unfortunately for Snelling, this statement is not true. Geologists know the limitations of radiometric dating.
They would prefer for the dates to all match perfectly, but they know they will not. Hopefully, when dating is performed, it will match close enough to the margin of error to be useful. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. Such is the nature of radiometric dating. As geologists, we do have trust that the science behind the dating is accurate, but we also realize there are many influencing factors that can change the outcome of the date.
Sometimes it is hard to tell which rocks young earth creationists obtained their samples from. In this case, we actually have a fairly good idea.
Sedimentary Rock Formations of the Grand Canyon
Recent Fossils Grand Canyon has so much more than pretty scenery. It contains an amazing diversity of rock formations with an abundance of fossils hidden within. The sedimentary rocks exposed throughout the canyon are rich with marine fossils such as crinoids, brachiopods, and sponges with several layers containing terrestrial fossils such as leaf and dragonfly wing impressions, and footprints of scorpions, centipedes, and reptiles.
